Shiatsu: Wellness Benefits and History in Japan

Today, shiatsu is widely recognized and practiced globally, both as a standalone therapy and as part of a comprehensive wellness program. It is often integrated into spa treatments, physical therapy, and holistic health practices. The blend of traditional techniques and modern therapeutic insights makes shiatsu a valuable tool for promoting overall health and well-being. Our therapists here at Seven Senses Spa are fully trained and are able to preform shiatsu.

Shiatsu's roots can be traced back to traditional Chinese medicine and anma, an ancient Japanese massage technique. It developed into a distinct practice in Japan in the early 20th century. Often considered the founder of modern shiatsu, Tokujiro Namikoshi established the first shiatsu clinic in Japan in 1925. He emphasized the importance of using fingers and palms to apply pressure to specific points on the body. Shiatsu gained official recognition from the Japanese government in the 1950s. It was defined as a form of therapy distinct from other forms of massage, with its own techniques and principles. Another significant development in the history of shiatsu is Zen Shiatsu, created by Shizuto Masunaga. Zen Shiatsu integrates traditional Chinese medicine concepts, focusing on the meridians and energy flow within the body. Shiatsu spread beyond Japan in the mid-20th century, becoming popular in Europe, North America, and other parts of the world. Its holistic approach and emphasis on balancing the body's energy resonated with many seeking alternative and complementary therapies.
